How to Play League of Legends to Have Fun & Win Games [Guide]

If you just downloaded the game and want to learn a couple of tips on how to play League of Legends in order to have fun (and not suck at it), then read on.

League of Legends is a fun game. It’s also a competitive one. If you’re new to the game, or if you’ve been playing for years but still aren’t winning, there are some steps that can help you get better at League of Legends and start having more fun with it.

This guide will show you how to play League of Legends well enough to win most games while also helping your teammates do well on their own accounts!

Choose the right champion

The first thing you will have to do before you start any League of Legends match is to choose a champion. There are many different champions, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles.

Choose one that suits your preferences and go with it! For example, if you like playing more aggressively then it’s a good idea to pick the best ADC champions in the game to make your role that much easier. Or if you like to take the role of a jungler go check out our LoL Jungler Guide.

Once the champion selection phase is complete, the game will begin.

The goal of League of Legends is to destroy the enemy team’s Nexus. The Nexus is a large structure in the middle of each team’s base that houses all their minions, turrets, and players.

To destroy an enemy’s Nexus, your team must push through their defenses by killing enemy champions and destroying turrets.

Make sure you’re not lagging

There are two ways to make sure that you’re playing League of Legends with no hiccups.

One way is by checking your ping, the other is by checking the server status.

If either of those things is not working on your end and/or there’s a problem with the servers, then it’s not going to be worth trying to play League of Legends at all.

So make sure everything’s good and then get ready for some fun!

Communicate with your team

The most important thing you can do to improve your gameplay is to communicate with your team.

You can use pings, emotes, voice chat and even text chat to let them know where enemies are, who needs help, what items they should buy, and more.

Some players also use a microphone to speak directly into the game.

This is called Voice Over IP (VOIP) and can be useful if you want an instant update on what’s happening in the game and don’t have time to type it out.

The most popular software these days for gamers is Discord, so go over the official League of Legends Discord server and find players to play with.

Use your minions wisely

You should always use your minions to damage your enemy champions and turrets. The minions in League of Legends have many uses such as:

  • Minions are the cannon fodder of the game. They exist to be killed by your enemy and take damage for you so that you don’t have to.
  • Minions do a lot of damage to enemy champions and turrets and can help you get away from the enemy if you get caught out.
  • Minions are great for farming, as they will attack the nearest enemy unit. However, if you want a specific minion to attack, you can click on it and give it commands. You can also tell minions to move or attack a specific location by clicking on one of your own units.

Play for objectives, not for kills

The first thing you need to do is not focus on kills but on objectives. This is something that I’ve seen a lot of new players do in League of Legends, most of them play for kills and MVP stats instead of playing for objectives.

If you’re playing a game and your team gets Baron buff at the 30-minute mark, they’ll often get it and just hang around it until the game is over. However, if you have Baron buff and are up by one kill or two kills over the enemy team at this time, don’t waste time hanging around Baron; go push other lanes or take towers!

While getting more kills sounds nice and all, it’s better to have an objective advantage than a kill advantage.

One thing that can really help with this problem is looking at statistics after each match: how many minions did we kill? How many turrets did we destroy? What was our CS (creep score)?

These numbers will tell you how well you’re doing as an individual during each match and can help guide your decisions about what plays were good or bad during the next one.

You’ll also want to look at how much gold per minute (GPM) everyone has; this statistic will let you know which players are earning their keep through farming rather than fighting/killing enemy champions since killing champs earns less gold than killing minions does (200g vs 40g).

Don’t go anywhere alone

Have your ally back

You can’t take on two enemies at once, I mean you technically can, but it’s not advised unless you really know what you’re doing, so don’t go anywhere alone.

If you’re alone and an enemy sees you, they will try to attack you. You can’t fight back properly when there’s no one else around and it’s much easier for the enemy to win a 1v1 fight than it is for you to win a 2v1 fight!

If an ally sees someone attacking you, they will come over and help out. But if there are two enemies attacking one person and only one other person around (the ally), then that poor guy is going to get destroyed by three people at once!

Also remember that even though we want our whole team together most of the time, sometimes we need someone who can run away from bad situations safely while everyone else stays put.

If someone gets caught out by himself while being chased by five enemies into a corner where he cannot fight back effectively anymore, he’ll probably die very quickly unless another teammate comes along with some sort of escape plan (like flashing).

Make good use of your items

Keep in mind that you’ll always be stronger with a full inventory of League of Legends items than without them, even if you’re behind other players in level.

You can still win fights without items. But it will be harder, and you should probably switch your strategy from “fighting” to “farming”. So if you’re behind in levels and gold, don’t be afraid to farm for a while until you get enough resources to get the items that you need.

League of Legends can be fun

League of Legends is a complex game. It has many different strategies and tactics to learn, so it’s important to play League for a while before you get good at it.

You need to know how the game mechanics work before you can think about how they apply to the strategies and tactics of your favorite champion.

You’ll also benefit from playing with friends who know how the game works because they can help you improve your skills faster than if you were learning by yourself.

If you want to make it even more fun, you can check out some of the best LoL skins for under 1000 RP. Sometimes losing a game is inevitable, but hey, at least you’ll look good doing it.

Conclusion

If you’ve been playing for a while, it can be hard to remember how it felt when you first started playing League of Legends.

If you’re new to the game, don’t worry: no one will expect you to know everything. But if you want to learn as much as possible in order to improve your performance and win more games, then follow these tips from above!
