EA Announces Lord of the Rings Heroes of Middle-earth Mobile Game

EA is making a Lord of the Rings game for mobile devices. The company is partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, which will be a free-to-play title.

The company released a press released earlier today and described that the free-to-play mobile game The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Unites will feature turn-based combat, a collection system, and characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games”

Malachi Boyle, Vice President of Mobile RPG for Electronic Arts

While the company claims the game will have in-depth storytelling, fast-paced action, and impressive graphics, this being after all an EA game, we are worried about how the game’s monetization will be implemented and whether or not it will make the game too unbalanced.

This is not the first time that Electronic Arts is developing video games based on the Lord of the Rings films.

The publisher developed video game adaptations of Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers and The Return of the King films, as well as Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth and its follow-ups.

However, since then, Warner Bros. took over the publishing rights for the franchise. The company released titles such as LEGO Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

We don’t have yet an actual release date for The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, but the development team behind it is hoping to enter regional closed beta testing this summer.

In addition to Heroes of Middle-earth, another Lord of the Rings game is also in the works.

This year, Daedelic Entertainment is planning to release The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an action-adventure game in which players will control Gollum as he journeys through Middle-earth.
