Selling over 2.9 million copies worldwide, Metroid Dread is now the bestselling title of the Metroid games franchise.

Nintendo announced that Metroid Dread, the latest installment in the popular sci-fi franchise, has become the best-selling game in the series, surpassing Metroid Prime.
Launched in October 2021, Metroid Dread quickly became one of the favorite games among Nintendo Switch players.
In its earnings report for the recent fiscal year, the company was pleased to announce that Metroid Dread had sold over 2.9 million copies since its initial launch in October 2021. It has become the best-selling Metroid game to date.
In comparison, Metroid Prime, which is the first 3D installment in the Metroid franchise and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary later this year, has sold 2.84 million copies.
Even though you might have expected more sales coming in from Japan (Nintendo’s homeland), it has only sold 270,000 copies there, with the additional 2.63 million coming from the rest of the world.
Metroid Dread has sold well in comparison with other Metroid games, though it still falls short of sales figures from major franchises like Super Mario, Animal Crossing, and The Legend of Zelda.
Despite being in development for years, Nintendo has not yet announced a release date for Metroid Prime 4. There are some rumors that Nintendo could be working on a ‘remaster’ of previous games in the series, and the strong sales of Dread would certainly justify a re-release.
About Metroid Dread
Metroid Dread is the first game in the Metroid series to be developed for the Switch console. It takes place after Metroid: Samus Returns.
The game follows Samus Aran as she investigates an outbreak at a Galactic Federation research facility on planet ZDR. In addition to her Power Suit, Samus gains new upgrades such as the Phantom Cloak that makes her invisible and the Omega Blaster, which allows her to destroy EMMI robots.
As the player progresses through the game, they find new weapons to use against enemies and new items allowing them to explore new areas.
